Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stevie Wonder, and Florence + The Machine to Headline Napa’s BottleRock Festival
Amid the hysteria of the recently-released Coachella lineup, some may have missed the equally (if not more) awesome lineup for Napa, California’s BottleRock Festival, which was announced on the very same day earlier this week. Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stevie Wonder, and Florence + The Machine are slated as headliners, and the undercard is looking pretty good too with a diverse group of artists spanning pretty much every genre you could think of. Also scheduled to perform at the fest are The Lumineers, Death Cab For Cutie, Lenny Kravitz, Walk The Moon, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Ziggy Marley, Grouplove, and plenty more.

2016 BottleRock Festival Lineup
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Chili Peppers are back, and they’re officially booked to headline this year’s BottleRock Festival. Since the eighties, RHCP has been bringing the funk to mainstream rock music, eventually earning themselves a coveted place in the Rock & Roll Hall of fame and establishing their legacy as one of the greatest rock bands of the modern era. As if the news of them touring this year isn’t enough, the band also stated that they’re finishing up another album, which should be due out later this year. The new record will be their first studio album in five years, following their 2011 effort I’m With You. The band, still anchored by original vocalist Anthony Kiedis and legendary bassist Flea, is known to put on an amazing live show, so it’s a safe bet that their set at BottleRock won’t dissapoint.
Stevie Wonder
With over 30 top ten hits and several platinum albums, American R&B icon Stevie Wonder is one of the most commercially successful artists of all time. In addition to his impressive album sales and chart popularity, the man also holds the record for the most Grammy Awards won by a male solo artist, with 22 wins to date. Over the last fifty years, Stevie Wonder has left a lasting legacy on the music industry. Some of his other awards and recognitions include a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, an Academy Award, and inductions into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame. Needless to say, he’s nothing short of a legend, and an amazing get as a festival headliner.
Florence + The Machine
Florence + The Machine, led by vocal powerhouse Florence Welch, rose to popularity with the release of their debut studio album Lungs in 2009. Lungs quickly became one of the best-selling albums of that year, and their singles were used in a number of movies and television shows, garnering more exposure for the band. Their rising mainstream success paved the way for several awards and recognitions, including a nomination for a 2011 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Their second full-length album, Ceremonials, also earned them two Grammy nominations in 2013. Florence + The Machine released a third album back in May, titled How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, and the band has been touring relentlessly ever since, appearing at what seems like nearly every festival over the last year.
The Lumineers
Denver-based folk rock band The Lumineers skyrocketed to international fame back in 2012 with their single “Ho Hey,” which has since been certified multiplatinum in several countries. Since then, the band has seen tremendous success, even picking up a couple of Grammy nominations that year, including one for Best New Artist. Following the success of their popular self-titled debut album, the band has remained active, releasing music for film and television here and there, including songs for the popular television show The Walking Dead and The Hunger Games film series. The Lumineers are said to be working on their sophomore record.
Death Cab For Cutie
This year, Grammy-nominated alternative rock band Death Cab For Cutie is back with their first album in four years, Kintsugi. Despite the recent amicable departure of lead guitarist and founding band member Chris Walla, the band remains intact with frontman Ben Gibbard still at the helm after all these years. Known for earnest lyrics across several stunning and emotional albums, highlights of which include 2003’s Transatlanticism and its 2005 follow-up Plans, Death Cab For Cutie has made an indelible mark on indie rock history.
Lenny Kravitz
Lenny Kravitz is known for his musical style that transcends genre, with songs that incorporate elements of rock, soul, and funk among other influences. He has won four consecutive Grammy Awards, and currently holds the record for most wins in the category of Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. He has sold millions of albums and collaborated with everyone from Madonna to Jay Z to Mick Jagger. Recently, Kravitz has branched out from his music career and ventured into acting, appearing in films like the Oscar-nominated Precious as well as the hit series The Hunger Games. However, he has by no means abandoned music, and released his tenth studio album, Strut, in 2014.
Walk The Moon
Upbeat alt-pop band Walk the Moon formed in Cincinnati in 2008. They independently released their debut album, I Want! I Want!, in 2010, and their single “Anna Sun” became a quick hit and officially put the band on the radar. They released their self-titled major label debut two years later, which earned them huge commercial success, but the best was yet to come for these guys. In September 2014, they released the catchy top 40 breakthrough single “Shut Up and Dance” before coming out with their third full-length Talking Is Hard a month later. Now, Walk the Moon is at the peak of their career, with “Shut Up and Dance” breaking Billboard records with its popularity.
Rodrigo Y Gabriela
Mexican duo Rodrigo Y Gabriela features classical guitarists Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero. The pair, known for acoustic guitar duets that are very impressive live, has released five studio albums thus far. In addition to releasing their own music, Sanchez and Quintero collaborated with Hans Zimmer for the soundtrack to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Rodrigo Y Gabriela’s latest album, 9 Dead Alive, came out in 2014.
Ziggy Marley
One of the several talented offspring of the late Bob Marley, Ziggy Marley has unsurprisingly made a name for himself as one of the biggest names in modern reggae music. Though he’s worked with several bands over the years, Marley has also released five albums as a solo artist. His latest solo record, Fly Rasta, came out in 2014 and is the most recent recipient of the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.
Grouplove
Indie pop band Grouplove debuted in 2011 with their first album Never Trust a Happy Song, almost immediately finding chart success with upbeat singles like “Colours” and “Tongue Tied.” Eventually, the latter single hit #1 on the Modern Rock charts and achieved platinum certification in the U.S. In 2013, the band released their equally-catchy sophomore album Spreading Rumours, which spawned more poppy and commercially successful singles like “Ways To Go” and “Shark Attack.”
Michael Franti & Spearhead
Started by musician and activist Michael Franti in 1994, Michael Franti & Spearhead is a band that combines hip hop with genres like rock, funk, soul, jazz, reggae, and folk. Known for amazing and inspiring performances, the band has played tons of festivals over the years and collaborated with the likes of Pink, Stephen Marley, Joan Osborne, and SOJA. Michael Franti & Spearhead has released eight albums to date, the latest of which came out in 2013.
Gogol Bordello
New York City’s Gogol Bordello uniquely blends gypsy music with punk and other genres. Their music, often referred to as “gypsy punk,” explores a vast array of cultural styles as diverse as the city they come from, and they are known for their lavish live sets and fantastic costumes. Formed in 2009, they initially built up a loyal following in NYC, and over the years gained more and more fans from all over to become as internationally popular as they are now.
Cold War Kids
Alternative rock band Cold War Kids formed in 2004 in Southern California. Two years later, they released their major label debut, Robbers & Cowards, which included their bluesy, bass-heavy hit single “Hang Me Up to Dry.” Now almost a decade later, the band is still making great music and selling out tours, and released their fifth and most recent studio album titled Hold My Home in 2014.
Iration
Although all of the band’s members originally hail from Hawaii, Iration formed in Santa Barbara, California. As one would expect from a California-based band of Hawaiians, their music is laid-back reggae rock that’s perfect for the beach. In 2007, Iration recorded and released their debut album, No Time For Rest, which topped Billboard’s Reggae Albums chart, and all of their subsequent albums went on to do the same. The group has been touring this year in support of their new album that came out in August, titled Hotting Up.
MisterWives
MisterWives is an indie pop band based in New York City. They have garnered a lot of buzz over the last year, and have opened for acts like Twenty One Pilots, Bleachers, and American Authors. They released their debut EP, Reflections, in 2014 on the New York indie label Photo Finish Records, followed by their first full-length album, Our Own House, in early 2015.
Atlas Genius
Hailing from Adelaide, South Australia, Atlas Genius centers around brothers Keith and Michael Jeffery. The band is a shining example of how effective the internet can be these days, as their big break came when their self-released first single, the super-catchy “Trojans,” was discovered on Soundcloud and featured by Neon Gold before the guys had even recorded anything else. Soon enough the Jeffery brothers found themselves being courted by major record labels, and after signing with Warner Bros., Atlas Genius released their debut album When It Was Now in 2013. This summer, the band dropped their new single “Molecules” ahead of their sophomore record Inanimate Objects.
Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness
Andrew McMahon first made himself known as the lead singer of the popular alternative bands Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin. Nowadays, he’s performing solo as Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, and released an album under that name in 2014. His latest album spawned the successful single “Cecilia and the Satellite,” a song named for his newborn daughter. McMahon has been touring all over for the last year or so, playing songs from his new project as well as busting out some fan favorites from his previous bands, which he’s sure to do again at his festival performances.
Buddy Guy
As one of the most celebrated blues guitarists of all time, Buddy Guy has influenced guitar greats like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. He began his music career in Chicago, and though he didn’t see immediate success, he was eventually performing with legendary blues artists like Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. Guy’s lasting legacy includes six Grammy Awards and an induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Though now in his late seventies, he is still able to put on an impressive live performance.
Andy Grammer
Singer, songwriter, and producer Andy Grammer released his self-titled debut album in 2011, which spawned the Hot 100 singles “Fine By Me” and “Keep Your Head Up.” Though that first album was quite a success, his second, titled Magazines or Novels, was even more so. The sophomore record came out in 2014 and features the hit single “Honey, I’m Good,” which has earned tremendous success across the pop, dance, and country charts.
Houndmouth
Alternative country band Houndmouth formed in 2011 in New Albany, Indiana. The band is made up of Matt Myers, Katie Toupin, Zak Appleby, and Shane Cody. In 2012, they performed at the SXSW music festival to promote their self-produced, self-titled EP, where they met Geoff Travis, the head of Rough Trade, who signed them shortly afterward. In 2013, Rough Trade issued the band’s debut full-length From the Hills Below the City. Last March, the band released a sophomore album called Little Neon Limelight, which features their alternative chart single “Sedona.”
The Pharcyde
The Pharcyde is an alternative hip hop group from Los Angeles formed in 1989. Though they haven’t released an album since 2004’s Humboldt Beginnings, the band’s members have been keeping busy with other projects and collaborations since then. The Pharcyde has also been steadily touring over the last few years, though now just as the duo of rappers Imani and Bootie Brown.
The Struts
English rock band The Struts was formed in 2010 by vocalist Luke Spiller and guitarist Adam Slack. Their often flamboyant glam rock style has drawn comparisons to bands like The Rolling Stones and Queen. In fact, the group was given the opportunity to open for The Rolling Stones in Paris last year in front of 80,000 fans, which without a doubt had an incredibly positive impact on the band’s career. In the summer of 2014, The Struts released their debut album Everybody Wants, which reached #52 on the U.K. albums chart.
The Joy Formidable
Welsh alternative rock band The Joy Formidable came to attention in 2011 upon releasing their debut album The Big Roar. By the end of the year, they were all over alternative radio stations and their song “Endtapes” was featured on the soundtrack for the latest Twilight film. Following the success of their first album, the band went on tour with Muse while working on their sophomore effort. Their second album, Wolf’s Law, saw the light in 2013.
Shovels & Rope
Shovels & Rope is an indie folk husband-and-wife duo from Charleston, South Carolina. Both members, Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst, already had successful music careers before coming together. Hearst worked with several bands and recorded as a solo artist while Trent split his time between a solo career and his band The Films. Together as Shovels & Rope, Trent and Hearst have released three successful studio albums.
X Ambassadors
Brooklyn’s X Ambassadors was originally formed by brothers Sam and Casey Harris and their childhood friend Noah Feldshuh in upstate New York. Once the trio moved to the big city, they joined up with drummer Adam Levin and released an EP called Love Songs Drug Songs in 2013. Last summer, the group released their debut full-length album VHS, which contains their #1 rock song “Renegades.”
The Orwells
Based out of Chicago, indie rock band The Orwells consists of vocalist Mario Cuomo, guitarist Dominic Corso, guitarist Matt O’Keefe, bassist Grant Brinner, and drummer Henry Brinner. The band formed in 2009, its members still in high school when they inked their record deal two years later. After receiving critical acclaim and being sought after by several major record labels, they eventually signed with Atlantic Records and later joined Arctic Monkeys on their North American tour. They released their latest album, Disgraceland, in 2014.
Coleman Hell
Canadian musician Coleman Hell has earned plenty of attention recently for his popular debut single “2 Heads,” which came out in February and has been a steady presence on alternative radio this year. Now signed to Columbia Records, Hell is currently touring with Robert DeLong, and he plans to release a debut studio record in 2016.
Ozomatli
Combining everything from hip hop to salsa to jazz and funk, Los Angeles’ Ozomatli has become known for their eclectic style since their formation in 1995. After debuting their self-titled first album back in 1998, they earned the chance to tour with Carlos Santana shortly afterward, and with that exposure built up a solid fan base. Since then, the band has won several Grammy Awards and Latin Grammy Awards, and to date they have released seven studio albums.
Jamestown Revival
The folk rock duo Jamestown Revival centers around the talents of childhood friends Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance. Growing up in Texas, Clay and Chance got into artists like Creedence Clearwater Revival and Willie Nelson early on, and that influence can be heard clearly in their music. They recorded their debut album, Utah, in a log cabin in the mountains of the state it’s named after, and released it in 2014.
The Suffers
The Suffers is a ten-piece soul band from Houston, Texas consisting of lead vocalist Kam Franklin, guitarist Alex Zamora, guitarist Kevin Bernier, bassist Adam Castaneda, saxophonist Cory Wilson, trumpeter Jon Durbin, trombonist Michael Razo, percussionist Jose Luna, keyboardist Patrick Kelly, and drummer Nick Zamora. Since the band formed in 2011, they have received eleven Houston Press Music Awards.
Kaleo
Icelandic rock quartet Kaleo formed in 2012, after which they quickly became a big hit in their home country. They released their eponymous debut album in 2013, which rose to the #1 spot on the charts in Iceland. Their mellow sound evokes that of artists like Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes.
Langhorne Slim & The Law
Langhorne Slim is the stage name of singer-songwriter Sean Scolnick, who takes his alias from his hometown of Langhorne, Pennsylvania. He released his debut EP, Electric Love Letter, in 2004, followed by his first full-length album, When the Sun’s Gone Down, two years later. Langhorne Slim currently records and tours with his backing band, The Law, with Langhorne himself on vocals and guitar, Jeff Ratner on bass, Malachi DeLorenzo on drums, and David Moore on banjo and keys.
The White Panda
The White Panda is a duo consisting of childhood friends Tom Evans (a.k.a. Procrast) and Dan Griffith (a.k.a. DJ Griffi). The two producers had been involved in independent projects before coming together; Evans was producing his own mashups in Chicago while Griffith was doing the same in Los Angeles. Procrast and DJ Griffi released their first single as The White Panda in 2009, and have since had 30+ singles reach #1 on The Hype Machine. The duo became one of the most-played artists on Soundcloud in 2011, leading to opportunities to tour with artists like Mac Miller, Mike Posner, and Ghostland Observatory.
San Fermin
San Fermin is the brainchild of Brooklyn-based composer and songwriter Ellis Ludwig-Leone. After graduating from Yale, where he studied music composition, Ludwig-Leone decided to focus his efforts on this project and wrote what became the band’s eponymous debut album released in 2013. San Fermin’s music is filled with Baroque pop flair and avant-garde arrangements that showcase Ludwig-Leone’s skill as a composer.
