Nationals Park History and Overview
Nationals Park is located at 1500 South Capitol St., along the Anacostia River, in the Navy Yard neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The park opened in 2008 and is home to the Washington Nationals (formerly the Montreal Expos).
Nationals Park is the first LEED-certified green major professional sports stadium in the US, with a seating capacity of 41,418.
Nationals Park Seat Numbers
The Nationals Park seating chart with seat numbers shows that seat 1 is always closer to the lower-numbered adjacent section. For example, seat 1 in section 129 would be closest to the highest numbered seat in section 128.
Washington Nationals Best Seats
The best seats for a Washington Nationals game are in the premium sections described below, the Lexus Presidents Club, and the PNC Diamond Club. If those seats fall out of your price range, the Club level tickets around the infield (sections 206-221) are also a fantastic option.
Finally, if you are looking to get a bit rowdy at a Nationals game, the outfield sections are a nice, cheap option and are where you will find the rowdiest Nats fans. Take the Metro to Nationals Park, so you don’t have to worry about driving home!
Washington Nationals Premium Seating
The PNC Diamond seats are located in sections 119-126. These seats include all-inclusive food and beverage options, such as draft beer, house wine, and soda, as well as complimentary in-seat service. Additionally, access to the PNC Diamond and Stars and Stripes Club is included. NOTE: The Home Plate reserve is sections 119 and 126, rows K to R. These seats do not provide any PNC Diamond perks.
The Lexus Presidents’ seats are considered the best seats in the house. They are in sections A to E. However, rows E to L in Sections A and E are referred to as the Home Plate Box and do not have access to the Lexus Presidents’ seats; instead, they are designated as PNC Diamond seats. Both include food, beer, and wine, but differ in quality.
Nationals Park Sun and Shade Guide
Nationals Park is oriented with home plate facing roughly east-northeast, and the stadium’s position in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood means afternoon and early-evening games are common. The park’s upper deck design provides meaningful overhang coverage for portions of the lower bowl.
For day games, the right field seats and the first base side lower level sections receive the most direct afternoon sun. The outfield bleacher area is fully exposed throughout afternoon games. The third base side lower level sections, particularly sections 104 to 121, benefit from upper deck shade by the second or third inning of 1:05 PM starts. The Nationals Club and premium club-level seats behind home plate are sheltered by the overhead structure and remain shaded through most of the game.
For evening games starting at 7:05 PM, the east-northeast orientation is a mild advantage because most fans are not looking directly into the setting sun. The exception is the right field and the first-base corner, where a low western sun can create glare in the first inning or two during summer starts.
The Budweiser Terrace and Right Field Gate area are popular social sections but are fully exposed to the afternoon sun, making sunscreen and a hat essential on day game days.
Best shaded seats for day games: Lower-level sections 104-121 on the third-base side. The Nationals Club and upper deck sections under the roof overhang on both sides are also strong shaded options.
Bottom line: Nationals Park follows the standard northeast-orientation shade pattern well. The third-base side lower bowl delivers comfortable afternoon baseball, while the right-field and first-base sections are in full sun for day games.
Washington Nationals Family Fun Area
If you are bringing the whole family to a Washington Nationals game, you may want to consider purchasing tickets near center field. The family fun area is located nearby (adjacent to the Red Porch Restaurant).
Kids will love the Strike Zone and Jungle Gym when they lose interest in the game and need to burn off some energy. Also, kids 12 and under can run the bases after select Sunday home games.
